Practical Info

From our unique unconference format to the stunning venue at Villa Grébovka, discover everything you need to know about the Inaugural European Solutions Journalism Summit.

The Summit

What's the format of this event? Can I expect keynotes and panels?

At the heart of our summit is an innovative concept: the unconference! Say goodbye to passive panel discussions and hello to dynamic, participant-driven sessions where you shape the agenda, have the chance to lead small-group sessions, and learn from the wealth of knowledge held by other participants. The unconference model is based on the idea of “All teach, all learn”; we think every attendee has just as much to offer as they do to learn.

Together, we’ll co-create an agenda that reflects our community’s diverse backgrounds, expertise, and passions, ensuring a multitude of sessions tailored to your needs and interests.

This summit is your opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, share experiences, and collaborate on driving positive change in your specific context. The collective participant reflection, an integral part of the unconference, will leave you with a renewed sense of purpose and a toolkit of actionable ideas to champion solutions journalism in your community.

Ways to participate

We encourage active participation through peer-to-peer interactions and small-group conversations rather than traditional panels. Bring your questions, ideas, and challenges to share and discuss.

A pre-event survey will help shape the agenda to meet your needs, so let us know your expertise, if you'd like to present your work and what you seek to learn.

Scholarships

We understand that some attendees may face financial constraints, so we are offering a limited number of scholarships to support those in need.

Please write to us at sojosummit@tol.org and specify the need for a scholarship or let us know through the registration form. You can tell us about your financial need and how attending the summit will enhance your work in solutions journalism and benefit your community. Do send us any relevant income statements or financial documents if needed.

(Please note: We have limited scholarships and we will try our best to support some participants on a need basis).

FAQS

WHOM AM I GOING TO MEET?

You will spend two days with like-minded people from across Europe who see the value of solutions-oriented reporting. There will be experienced solutions journalism practitioners, trainers, educators and journalists as well as those who haven’t tried this approach to reporting yet, but feel they need a change in their reporting practice to better serve their audience.

What am I going to learn?

Everything you always wanted to know about solutions journalism! Everyone in the room is an expert and we can learn so much from each other - that is the great thing about the unconference. It’s not about the staged speakers and panels, it’s about everyone being part of a community.

You will learn from your peers about their experiences, views, ideas, and lessons from practicing solutions journalism while they will learn from you. You can also propose your own topic to discuss in one of the break-out sessions - seek the answers to your burning questions from the expert crowd!

Will I be able to feature my work? Can I present at the event?

We will definitely provide space at the summit for people to talk about and share some of their work. But, as we said earlier, we won’t have any traditional panels. Instead, we will be designing an agenda that maximizes peer-to-peer participation and small-group conversations. We hope (and expect) that you will come to the summit with questions you want answered, ideas you want to share, and challenges that you want help addressing.

How do I participate in the design of the agenda?

We will send out a survey to all confirmed attendees closer to the event to help us shape an agenda that best meets your needs. Tell us what you’re an expert in, what you’re looking to better understand, and how we can help.

Any other questions to be answered? Please write to us at sojosummit@tol.org.
